I’m a stylist, and I’m using Monat

Yep. I never thought in a million years those words would come out of my mouth. Yet here we are.

I guess we should start at the beginning. If Monat had no haters, I was dead. It was going to make your hair fall out and ruin your life forever. I wouldn’t touch it with a ten foot pole. I would go out of my way to tell people not to ever use it. All the while, I’d never even used, let alone touched, a bottle of Monat. For about ten years, I hated on a product I had never even tried and just regurgitated what I had heard other people say.

So here we are, in 2025. I knew one of my extension clients was using Monat. Surprisingly to me, she’s had her hair for 9 months and it looks and feels pretty great. I started to ask her about it, and she was raving. She preferred the products to what I had given her in her extension care kit.

Fast forward, I see a stylist I know come out on social media that she had been using Monat in secret for A WHOLE YEAR. Guess what? She also loved them.

The way I sent her a message so freaking fast your head would spin. We went back and forth for a while, expressing concerns about ingredients and things we’d heard, and how her experience has been. Her favorite product was the dry shampoo. She asked me if I’d be open to trying the brand. To past Alex’s surprise, I said yes. I was about out of my shampoo and conditioner anyway, and worst comes to worst my experience is decent content. She asked me questions about my hair, set me up a shopping cart, and sent me the link (super cool-why don’t our pro products have this option?!)

I hate to say it, and you’re gonna hate to hear it, I actually liked the products. I’ve gotten so many compliments on how shiny my hair is, and I’ve even been asked if I put my extensions back in because my hair looks thicker.

One of the ingredients I was originally concerned about was red clover…aka Capixyl. Come to find out, Capixyl is a very common ingredient in both skincare and haircare-including multiple Professional brands shampoos and serums. So why was only Monat getting heat over this ingredient?

So let’s talk about product first impressions.

1. The oil. Two-three drops is all you need, it is so rich and goes a long way! I also have been doing weekly oil treatments with it in my scalp. I’ve left it on for 15 min or hours, depending how my day goes

2. The shampoo and conditioner. So far the shampoos I’ve had say to leave on for a few minutes, so do the conditioners. So that’s what I’ve been doing. And my hair feels so clean! None of it has been drying either which I feel like I usually expect when things make your hair feel super clean. They also smell pretty good without being over powering. I think the Monat black is my go-to for my first shampoo. A little goes a long way with their shampoo- only need a dime or nickel size. I promise that’s all you need!

3. The scalp serum. I either place it on my fingertips, and then rub my fingertips on my scalp or do spread out drops of the serum on my scalp, then rub them in. I don’t look greasy, even when it’s been a day or two since I have washed. This is something I use on my scalp daily.

4. The thermal protectant. I’m not as big of a fan of the scent, however I’ve used it both wet and dry with no issue! A heat protectant is a necessity.

5. The 30 second perfector. This plumps up my under eye so well, with no adverse affects on my sensitive skin. I’m obsessed. I got a second when it was on sale (oh yeah, VIP customers get access to special sales and deals)

   
   

So to conclude, for now I’m going to keep using the products and documenting both my shed and how my postpartum baby hairs grow. I’m also okay with my clients using it, so much so I signed up as an MP to get access to more information and training on the products so I know what to recommend if they want to use, or are already using Monat and want to maximize their results.
